The 2017 keynote speaker, Dr. John McCarthy, director of the Center for Creativity and Change and is a professor in the Department of Counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His lecture entitled “How the alligator got stuck on the escalator: Five (or more) keys to creative problem-solving," was held at 10:00 am.m Friday, April 14, 2017, in the K-State Alumni Center.

The lecture was part of a day-long event including a networking luncheon, professional development, panel discussions, and networking sessions for students, professionals and alumni. Students interacted with advisory board members and professionals from the interior design program and the apparel and textiles program.

On Thursday, April 13, 2017 the ATID Student Symposium opened with the 4th Annual ATID Showcase of Excellence. This event included a mounted exhibit and a live runway show featuring work from K-State students and Kansas secondary education students. The showcase was held at the McCain Auditorium in Manhattan, Kansas. A A total of one hundred seventy submissions including thirty-two from secondary education students. There were a total of one hundred thirty entries accepted into the show. In response to the symposium theme, "Creative Thinking," awards were granted in the following categories: Best of Show Runway (must have addressed theme), Best of Show Mounted Exhibit (must have addressed theme), Inspired by Janet Rees (pdf), K-State Upperclassman and Graduate, K-State Lowerclassman and 7-12 Kansas students.

This event was a great opportunity for current and prospective students to meet alumni, professionals and faculty within in the apparel and textiles and interior design industries. It provided students the opportunity to express their creativity and highlight their work at a prestigious, annual event.
