Fashion Studies Student Awards

In recent years, our Fashion Studies students have been very successful in regional and national design competitions.

2022

  • Celeste Graciano, senior in fashion studies, received second place in the National Alpaca Design Competition, and was thereby rewarded with a spread in the nationally distributed Aplaca Magazine and a monetarial scholarship.

2021

  • Jaxson Metzler, selected to present collection at Kansas City Fashion Week for Spring 2021.
  • Gracie Key, selected to present collection at Kansas City Fashion Week for Spring 2021.

2020

  • Rachel Dugger and Dani Hall, December 2019 graduates of the fashion studies program and Kelly Grogan, a May 2020 graduate of the fashion studies program, were awarded the Optitex Technology Award in the undergraduate category during the 2020 International Textile and Apparel Association’s annual conference. This team developed a design developed a design collection using advanced computer technologies such as 2D digital pattern drafting, 3D virtual simulation and textile digital printing. One of the designs in that collection, Nebulous, was selected for the top award. This collection was developed as a part of the final project of a fashion pre-production technology course in fall 2019. The goal of this course was to equip students with advanced digital technologies for fashion pre-production and to help them understand the fashion pre-production process for mass production. Therefore, the final project of this course was designed to simulate the pre-production process in an industrial environment. Notably, by collaborating with an industrial partner, Academy Sports + Outdoors, students were prepared to work professionally under constraints.

2018

  • Sydney Lenox (2018, sophomore in apparel and textiles) College of Human Ecology's Undergraduate and Graduate Research and Creative Inquiry Forum. Top Presenter - Creative Inquiry, who presented "Appropriate Inspiration of Fashion: Focus on Guatemala."
  • ATID Student Symposium. (2018, April 12-13). The Showcase of Excellence highlighted K-State student work and entries from secondary students in Kansas. K-State student award winners were Jorge Lobo, Kathryn Wilson, Delaney Green, Brittany Blackim, Mackenzie Smith, Allyson Woodard, Mikayla Abernathy, Emily Andrews, Margaret Loughman, Laura Spriet, Emily Pascoe, Sahar Ejeimi, Kelly Brackett, Andrada Redmond, Rachel Dugger, Jaxson Metzler, Jamie Hoffman, Ashley Oldham, Amber Faloona, Yiya Wang, Annabelle Frese and there were three secondary school students recognized.
  • Brooke Wallace, Emily Sanders, Maria Zarina Domingo, and Yelei Yang, undergraduate students in apparel and textiles, won the EFI/Optitex Student Award for Best Use of Opitex, a computer program for digital design of apparel products.
  • Sydney Lenox, 3rd place Alpaca Fashion Design Competition, Wichita, KS.
  • Emily Andrews assisted Dr. Haar in the organic indigo dyeing of the gown, Celestial Indigo. The gown was exhibited at the ITAA Conference Design Exhibition, Cleveland, OH and is featured on the book cover front and back of Martin, T. (2018), Sustainability in stilettos: A style-conscious guide to navigating the evolving world of fashion and beyond.

2017

  • Allison Zayas, junior in apparel and textiles, took 1st place in the fashion design catergory at the 2016 Alpaca Owner's Association Fleece Conference Design Competition in Arlington, VA. There were 76 entries and 20 schools that participated in the competition. Other students placing were Yiya Wang, sophomore took 11th place, MacKenzie Larkin, sophomore took 14th place and Xiwen Wei, sophomore took 18th place. Work was completed in AT400 Fashion Illustration instructed by Dr. Sherry Haar.
  • White, Samantha, and Reeves-DeArmond, G. (2017). Reviving the development of hypermedia resources for historic dress courses. Proceedings of the International Textile and Apparel Association. Online publication and oral presentation at annual conference. (Genna Reeves-DeArmond, faculty adviser).
  • Emily Andrews (2017, senior in Apparel Design and Production) College of Human Ecology's Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry Forum. Best creative inquiry presentation for her project "Rooted." The project involves naturally dyed meditation garments.

2016

  • EPA National Student Design Competition for Sustainability on People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) (2016) Madeleine Biles (ID) and Imran Islam (AT) were members of an interdisciplinary team recognized with a judges’ commendation for a project titled: “Net zero energy air filtration: Innovative filter media applications for improved indoor air quality and energy efficiency,” (Julia Day, Jooyoun Kim, Steve Eckels, and Chris Manzo, faculty advisers).
  • Spring 2017 Research Grant awarded to Samantha White (Apparel Design and Production) by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry. $1000. Research: Assessment of a hypermedia study resource for a history of apparel fashion course.” Advisor: Dr. Genna Reeves-DeArmond, Assistant Professor of Apparel and Textiles.
  • Annabelle Frese, Samantha White, and Sierra Chase, undergraduate apparel and textiles students, were each awarded a $5,000 scholarship through the 2017 YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund. The scholarship recipients are also invited to attend the annual awards gala in New York City, will have exclusive access to fashion industry internship opportunities, and will be matched with an industry executive mentor for 2017.
  • Annabelle Frese, junior in apparel and textiles, took 1st place in the fashion design category at the 2016 Alpaca Owner's Association Fleece Conference Design Competition in Arlington, VA. There were 90 entries and 40 schools that participated in the competition. Other students placing were Emily Andrews, junior took 5th place, Karsen Overton, junior took 6th place and Allyson Woodard, junior took 7th place. Work was completed in AT400 Fashion Illustration instructed by Dr. Sherry Haar.
  • ATID Student Symposium (2016, April 21-22). The Showcase of Excellence highlighted K-State student work en entries from secondary students in Kansas. K-State student award winner were Brooke Wallace, Elena Andrus, Schyler Slaven, Brenna Conner, Shelby Shinkle, Kelly Kell, Brianda Gonzalez, Emily Andrews, Annabelle Frese, Virginia Davis, McKenzey Hanna, Samantha White and there were three secondary school students recognized.
  • Yuan, Y. (2016). Morphology-Driven Repellent Polystyrene Nanowebs. 3rd place winner at K-State GRAD Forum in the interdisciplinary research poster section (Jooyoum Kim and Seong-O Choi, faculty advisors).
  • Yuan, Y. (2016) received Science Communication Fellowship at Sunset Zoo.

  • AT graduate student, Md. Imranul Islam, received 1st place in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education category at the 20th K-State Research Forum (KRF), 2015 for his oral presentation. Replacing 100% cotton fabric with jute-cotton blended (jutton) fabric: An eco-environmental sustainability approach in the context of Bangladesh.
  • Md. Imranul Islam (Ph.D. student in Apparel and Textiles) received a Kappa Omicron Nu Research Fellowship.
  • Aaron Simon, junior in apparel and textiles, took top honors in three categories at the recent Alpaca Owners Association competition in Denver. He placed first in design competition, received the Judge's Choice award and was awarded Best Essay. Virginia Davis, also an apparel and textiles junior in the apparel, textiles and interior design department in the College of Human Ecology, placed third out of 76 fashion entries in the design competition. Other students placing were Maggie Stuart, ninth; Schyler Slaven, 11th; Molly Fitzpatrick, 13th; Emily Sanders, 23rd; Brooke Wallace, 26th; and Doyun "Lydia" Lee, 33rd.

  • AT graduate student, Kelsie Doty, received 3rd place in the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education category at the K-State Research Forum for her poster presentation, Exploration of natural dyes derived from native Kansas Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) and Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) sawdust on mordanted and nonmordanted cotton yarn for use in a hand woven textile. Kelsie conducted the project in Dr. Sherry Haar's AT 805 Research in Design course.
  • Lauren Reiter was selected by ITAA faculty members as 1 of 2 finalists for the 2014 ITAA Graduate Student Liaison – a Council position. She was not ultimately selected as the Liaison but her selection as a finalist is notable
  • Madison Koopman, sophomore in Apparel and Textiles from Manhattan, KS received the BEST OVERALL ESSAY award in the student design competition sponsored by the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association. There were a total of 93 entries addressing the benefits of designing with alpaca fiber.

  • AT graduate student, Erin Monfort-Nelson, awarded 2nd place in the 18th annual K-State Research Forum for her research paper, titled, "Development of a Conceptual Model and Empirical Definition of Socially Responsible Apparel Consumer Behavior." Her faculty advisor is Dr. Kim Hiller.
  • Kelsie Doty awarded 3rd place in the 18th annual K-State Research Forum for her research paper, titled, "Comparison of Aluminum Mordanted and Nonmordanted Wool and Cotton Dyed with Walnut." Her faculty advisor is Dr. Sherry Haar.
  • Ashley Meek awarded 1st place in the 2013 AATCC Concept 2 Consumer Design Competition for her "Lucky London" design. Her faculty advisor is Dr. Minyoung Suh.
  • Cheryl Yacenda awarded Honorable Mention in the 2013 AATCC Design Competition for her "Crazy in the 80s" design. Her faculty advisor is Dr. Minyoung Suh.

2012

  • Ashley Meek awarded Second Place by the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association Student Design Competition.
  • Carrie Cook awarded Honorable Mention Award by the AATCC's 8th Annual C2C Design Competition.
  • Erin Monfort-Nelson, AT graduate student, received the College of Human Ecology's Jean Alford Myers Award to support her travel to attend and present at the annual ITAA meeting.
  • Shelia West, AT graduate student, awarded the Drake Martin Commitment to Social Justice Award at the Upper Midwest Regional Conference for the Association of College and University Housing Officers.

2011

  • AT student one of five students nation-wide selected to compete in the Project OR design competition held at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market.

2010

  • AT graduate student received the Lois Dickey Fellowship for Doctoral Students from the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA).
  • AT graduate student awarded Kansas State University's Doctoral Dissertation Research Award.
  • AT graduate student awarded Best in Show in the graduate category of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) design competition.

2009

  • AT student awarded First Place in the Fashion Group International student design competition in Kansas City.

2006

  • AT students awarded First, Second, and Third Place by the Fashion Group International of Kansas City.
  • AT student awarded Third Place by the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association.
  • AT graduate student awarded ITAA Scholarship.

2005

  • An AT graduate student was awarded First Place in the Concept to Consumer design competition, sponsored by AATCC.
  • AT students awarded First Place and Second Place in the Fiber to Fashion 2005 design board competition sponsored by the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association, Atlanta, GA.
  • AT students awarded First and Second Place awards by the Fashion Group International of Kansas City.

2004

  • AT students were awarded 1st place, 2nd place and Honorable Mention for their designs at the national Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association.
  • An AT student won the 2004 Gen Art Perrier Bubbling Under Award of $10,000 for Futuristic Design Concepts.
  • An AT graduate student was one of 10 GTA's at K-State honored for their teaching.
  • An AT graduate student received the Marjorie Joseph Scholarship for beginning doctoral students in the amount of $1,000 for ITAA.
  • An AT graduate student received the Design Excellence Award at ITAA.
  • An AT undergraduate student received the Sustainable Design Award at ITAA.
  • An AT student was a finalist in the Threads Design Competition at the Sewing Expo in Novi, MI.
  • AT students won two 1st Place, two 2nd Place and one Honorable Mention award at the Fashion Group International Career Day, Kansas City Career Day.
  • Seven AT students' designs were exhibited at the International Textile and Apparel Association juried design exhibition, Portland, OR.

2003

  • Two graduate textile students received AATCC Regional Research Awards.
  • AMD students won 1st and 2nd place in Kansas City Fashion Group International Design Competition.
  • Two AT students' designs accepted for juried exhibition in international competition, Savannah, GA.
  • AT graduate students received three of five national research awards from the American Association of Textile Chemist and Colorist through a competitive process.
  • An AT student won the ITAA study abroad scholarship.
