Garcia, Dudek receive promotions

Jane Mertz Garcia, family studies and human services, has been promoted to full professor.
Michael Dudek, apparel, textiles and interior design, has been promoted to associate professor with tenure.
K-State President Kirk Schulz approved the promotions and tenure - 18 faculty members to full professor, 34 to associate professor with tenure, and tenure to four faculty members - which go into effect July 1.
Garcia focuses on swallowing disorders
Garcia is an associate professor in communication sciences and disorders and a licensed speech-language pathologist. Her clinical, teaching, and research relate to acquired communication and swallowing disorders. Research includes diet modifications for impaired swallowing (dysphagia) and supplemental speech strategies for severe dysarthria. She has published and presented nationally in both areas.
Garcia received the Human Ecology Faculty Research Excellence Award in 2006 for her work concerning the use of thickened liquids as a clinical management strategy for people with impaired swallowing.
Her responsibilities also include supervising student projects (e.g., senior honor’s project or master’s thesis) and providing clinical instruction to graduate clinicians in their assessment and management of adults with neurologically-based communication or swallowing disorders at the KSU Speech and Hearing Center.
She is a member of the Kansas Speech, Language, Hearing Association (KSHA) and American Speech, Language, Hearing Association (ASHA). Additionally, Garcia has led the Manhattan-area support group for survivors of traumatic brain injury and their families since 1998. She received her PhD from the University of South Alabama.
Dudek expert in lighting, adaptive reuse
Dudek, who teaches interior design, specializes in adaptive reuse, lighting for interiors, sustainability and the design process.
He received his bachelor of science in architecture from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee and his master of science in interior design from Florida State University.
Before joining the K-State faculty, Dudek spent 23 years in full-time interior design practice with clients such as Coca-Cola, Sun Microsystems, Lucent Technologies, Bank of America, Alltel, RREEF Funds and Wachovia. His work has been features in such publications as Florida Architect and Interiors.
His architecturally oriented background has allowed him the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the building process. He is N.C.I.D.Q. certified.
