Laura Romig has been chosen as student commencement speaker for the College of Human Ecology on Dec. 11 in McCain Auditorium.
Joining her on the program will be Mary and Carl Ice, who received the college’s Friend of the College honor in 2009. Both are K-State alumni; he is president and chief operations officer of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company, Fort Worth, Tex.
Romig, a senior in dietetics, said she plans to speak about applying the college motto – “In a world focused first on things, we focus first on people” – to work and life after graduation.
“You have a choice in how to react to life’s ever-changing circumstances,” she said. “I will remind classmates that they will always be remembered for caring first about people, challenging the status quo, and continuing to pursue their dreams with enthusiasm and passion.”
Romig has been active in Human Ecology Council, Human Ecology Ambassadors and the honors program.
She served as a delegate to the Honors Leadership Bootcamp in Washington D.C., as president of the Student Dietetic Association and as chair of the National Student Advisory Committee of the American Dietetic Association.
She is currently completing her rotation in clinical dietetics at Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita.
“The investment of time, money and energy by others empowers me to want to give back to the college,” she wrote in her application.
