Sauer to chair RD exam panel

Friday, May 13, 2011

Kevin Sauer, assistant professor in hospitality management and dietetics, has accepted the chair of the examination panel for the Commission on Dietetic Registration for the next term.

The panel makes sure the RD and DTR exams are administered, processed and analyzed professionally. It is made up of 5 registered dietitians (RD) and a registered dietetic technician (DTR) who have expertise in different areas of dietetics.

The exam panel also determines new exam content domains and exam outlines to reflect current practice and competencies to essentially protect the public, Sauer said. Changes such as these greatly impact all education programs of course, he added.

To have an RD after his name, a person not only has had rigorous education and on-site training but has passed a qualifying examination. The main purpose of the exams is to protect the public through credentialing and assessment processes that assure the competence of registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered, Sauer explained. “Like the lawyer’s bar exam vouches for the qualifications of an attorney, the RD and DTR exams signify that a person has and knowledge and understanding to practice in dietetics.”
