Ashley Meek, a junior in apparel and textiles, won second place in the national alpaca design competition for students.
Meek received a $750 scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Nashville, Ten., for events that included tours of alpaca farms and an alpaca fiber mill. The Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association sponsored the competition.
Her winning entry was a board displaying a line of apparel for little girls. Each costume was made almost entirely of alpaca fiber. Meek’s 3-year-old daughter Stella was the model for the display’s illustrations.
“Designs were based on a forecasted fashion trend for Autumn/Winter 2012. The forecasted colors and textures mix fantasy and fairy tale with cozy references of the inspiring natural world. The dresses and coat I designed were embellished with embroidery and silk trim. The dresses were paired with coordinating leggings,” she explained.
Her work, to be features in a 2012 issue of Alpacas magazine, was an assignment in Sherry Haar's illustration class.
“I’m planning a career in textile design, hopefully in children’s wear,” Meek said.
