K-State's Graduate School requires each applicant whose native language is not English to demonstrate English proficiency. Applicants must achieve a satisfactory score (defined below) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Pearson Test of English (PTE). TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE is required to ensure language barriers do not jeopardize students' progress toward a degree.
TOEFL is offered several times a year worldwide by the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey (K-State’s TOEFL school code is 6334). International applicants should take the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE as early as possible to avoid delays in processing their applications. However, the test date should be no more than 18 months prior to the application deadline.
An applicant who has earned a degree from a regionally or nationally accredited United States college or university in the last two years is exempt from this requirement. The PA program however, may require a demonstration of English language proficiency during the admissions process.
Score requirements
|
Test |
Minimum Score |
| IBT TOEFL (internet-based) | 84 |
| TOEFL (PBT) | 550 |
| IELTS | 6.5 |
| Pearson Test of English (PTE) | 60 |
The K-State PA program may consider applicants who earn their degrees from colleges and institutions outside the United States. International applicants must apply to the Graduate School before applying to CASPA. Find more information on the international Graduate application on the graduate student website. International applicants must have their transcripts verified and translated by an approved organization, e.g., World Education Services (WES). Applicants must also meet all other admission requirements.
An individual interview is required for admission and will be offered to the most qualified applicants. The PA Program Admissions subcommittee coordinates interviews. Program faculty will lead the interview teams that include community health care providers, health professions alumni, and K-State College of Health Sciences faculty. Notification of an interview will be sent at least two weeks before the interview date to the applicant's e-mail address submitted on the CASPA WebAdMIT system.
After application review, the K-State Program Admissions Committee will select applicants for an interview. The program will offer interviews based on a rolling admission basis. The K-State PA program plans to admit up to 44 students for each matriculating class. Due to the high volume of applications programs typically receive, many applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements will not be selected for an interview. The admission cycle interviews will be in June, July, August, and September (as needed).
- An interview is required for admission.
- Applicants are selected for an interview based on the strength of their CASPA application, including a review of their academic preparation and the program's preferred criteria.
- During the interview process, applicants will be provided with and asked to acknowledge their agreement to follow the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) Code of Ethics and the PA program’s social media and professionalism policies.
- Applicants will be provided with the PA Program’s technical standards at the time of interview and must meet these standards upon enrollment.
- Each interview will be conducted over one day, typically on a Saturday.
- Professional attire is expected.
- The program will interview 100-120 applicants.
- Applicants are responsible for all travel-related expenses (flight, lodging, local travel and off-campus meals), and there are no grants or scholarships available to offset interview expenses.
After each interview session, interview teams will review all candidate materials and interview performances, complete the required documentation from the day's interview, and add their recommendations to the form. The admissions committee will make the final selection for the cohort, and the alternates will also be selected.
Typically, applicants will be informed of their acceptance status via e-mail within two weeks of their admission interview and will receive written confirmation of their acceptance and any conditional requirements via a Letter of Acceptance for the Graduate School, either by standard mail or by e-mail.
The remaining applicants will fall into two categories:
- Alternate List – applicants qualifying for the alternate list will be informed by e-mail and asked to confirm their interest in being added to the list.
- No Offer List – applicants who are not accepted will be informed by e-mail and asked to review the program’s form letter on CASPA for possible reasons for non-acceptance.
Each applicant accepted into the program will be charged a $1,000 non-refundable deposit to reserve their seat. Tp secure a seat, admitted students must submit a $1,000 deposit upon receiving their offer. This deposit will be applied toward the first-semester tuition and will be refunded only if the PA program does not matriculate students in January.
Technical standards attestation
- All students must meet the minimum technical standards necessary to achieve the knowledge, skills, and competencies required of an entry-level physician assistant.
- All conditionally accepted applicants who are offered a seat in the program will be required to sign a statement attesting to their ability to meet the K-State PA program's Technical Standards (pdf).
Once accepted into the K-State PA program, students must provide the following information and complete the required processes before enrollment, but no later than Dec 10th. Each requirement and the associated program policies are described below. Details for providing the information and completing the onboarding processes are included in the Letter of Acceptance.
All conditionally accepted applicants must demonstrate compliance with the K-State PA Program Student Health Policy by submitting the following information on the Health Information and Immunization Form:
- Verification of immunizations. Required immunizations will be published annually and updated in accordance with CDC recommendations for health care workers, and the individual requirements of the clinical sites the program uses for clinical experiences.
- Verification of completion of a physical examination, which includes the health care provider's acknowledgment that the applicant meets the technical standards for admission.
- Health insurance status – All K-State PA students must provide proof of health insurance upon matriculation and annually. Students must maintain health insurance coverage throughout the program.
- Background Check and Drug Screening
All conditionally admitted applicants to the Kansas State University Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) Program will be required to undergo criminal background and sex offender (CBSO) checks (pdf) performed at least 45 days prior to matriculation. Criminal convictions of any kind may make it difficult to place a student into clinical rotations. Additionally, an applicant's criminal background may adversely affect the ability to obtain licensure or clinical privileges. It is the applicant's responsibility to address any such issues and determine the continued viability of their candidacy. Refer to the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or the applicable state medical board governing PA practice for further information. Applicants with felony convictions will not be admitted due to the inability to place them into appropriate clinical rotation experiences. Applicants are encouraged to accurately disclose all legal history, even in conviction has been expunged. Often, the criminal background check will include past criminal history that the applicant believed was erased from the record, and the applicant may have been advised by their own counsel to answer inaccurately.
The offer of admission is conditional and is contingent upon the results of the background check. If a conditionally admitted applicant declines to undergo the background check or if findings of a grievous nature are revealed, the program will rescind the admission offer. A copy of the CBSO check results will be made available to the applicant upon request. The program will distribute other copies of CBSO results on a need-to-know basis. All applicants will sign a release form authorizing the program to release appropriate information to clinical sites. While enrolled, a background check will be repeated annually, or more frequently, at the clinical facility's discretion.
CBSO check results that limit the program's ability to secure clinical experiences may prevent students from progressing in their didactic phase, being promoted to the clinical phase, or being recommended for graduation. By accepting admission to the program, applicants agree to submit to national criminal background checks and agree to pay expenses associated with this requirement.
Acceptance into and successful completion of the K-State PA Program does not imply or guarantee that the student will obtain state licensure upon graduation.
If marijuana is detected, it will be reported as a positive result even if legally prescribed to you in your state. A positive drug screen will result in the admittance being rescinded due to the difficulty in placing the applicant into clinical rotations. It is the applicant's responsibility to address any such issues and determine the continued viability of their candidacy. Refer to NCCPA or the applicable state medical board governing PA practice for further information. Read the K-State PA program's full urine drug screening (UDS) Policy (pdf).
