Hospitality Administration
The interdisciplinary doctoral program in Health and Human Sciences offers a specialization in Hospitality Administration. The doctoral program requires a minimum of 90 semester credit hours beyond the baccalaureate degree, including a minimum of 15 hours of dissertation research. Up to 30 hours from the student's master's degree may be applied toward the coursework requirement.
Graduates of the Health and Human Sciences with specialization in Hospitality Administration (Ph.D.) program will demonstrate the following:
- efficient management of human, material, technological and financial resources
- ability to recognize emerging trends and implement strategies to accommodate change
- analytical decision‐making
- commitment to ethical business practices
- effective oral and written communication skills
- application of research methods and findings
- skills in research proposal development
- publication and application of research findings
- leadership in the design and implementation of theoretical or applied research
- application of skills in leadership and administration in foodservice and hospitality operations
- assumption of the responsibilities for self-direction, self‐evaluation and professional development
- effective skills in instruction in higher education settings
- appreciation of the importance of the internal and external environments and their impact on educational and operational effectiveness
- leadership in the administration of dietetic or hospitality and tourism management educational programs

Major Professor and Supervisory Committee
- The department will assign each student a temporary advisor to assist the student in registering for coursework until the student selects a major professor and files a program of study.
- Students are encouraged to select a major professor as soon as possible. The student must select a
major professor from the Department of Hospitality Management graduate faculty who has been certified to direct doctoral students. If a student wishes to work with a major professor who has not yet been certified to direct doctoral students on his/her own, a co-major professor who is so certified may serve on the committee to assist with the direction of the research. - By the beginning of the second semester of enrollment, the student (in consultation with the major professor) should select three additional faculty members with graduate faculty status to serve as members of the supervisory committee. At least two of the four members of the supervisory committee (including the major professor) must be faculty in the Department of Hospitality Management. At least one member should be from another department.
- The fall doctoral student deadline is May 1.
- However, to be considered for assistantship funding, you must apply by January 8.
- Interviews for assistantships may take place in February
- International Students must meet English Proficiency Scores as outlined in the Graduate Handbook.
- The spring doctoral student admission deadline is December 1st. Funding may not be available for spring admits.
- International students have deadlines set by the Graduate School – January 8 for Fall admission and August 1 for Spring admission.
- Interviews are not required for admission
- We do not admit in summer.
- A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of coursework.
- Submit an application for admission to the Kansas State University Graduate School for the Hospitality Administration program along with a domestic application fee of $65 or an international application fee of $75, as required by the Graduate School. Your application must include the following documents:
- Personal statement
- Three professional references and letters of recommendation
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
- Resume
- Official English Proficiency Scores (international applicants only)
- Your personal statement should include your motivation for pursuing a graduate degree, career goals, your research interests, the faculty member(s) with whom you are interested in working, and any additional pertinent information you would like to share about your personal, academic, and/or professional experiences.
- NOTE: The GRE is required for PhD admission for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 admission. Beginning Fall 2027, the GRE is not required.
