Sarah Truman '15

Sarah Truman is originally from Hutchinson, Kansas. She graduated from K-State with honors in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in life sciences with a secondary major in gerontology, and minors in biology and leadership studies. Among involvement in several activities during her time at K-State, she was a gerontology ambassador, Executive Vice President of Sigma Kappa sorority, a member of Student Government Association, and a member of Mortar Board Honor Society to name a few.

After graduating from K-State, she attended the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry in San Antonio, Texas to attain her Doctor of Optometry degree in 2019. At the time of her graduation, she was selected a member of the Gold Key International Honor Society, which is an elite honor society that recognizes an optometrist's dedication to the field of optometry through their scholarship, leadership, and service to the profession.

After graduating from optometry school, Sarah completed her residency training in primary care and advanced ocular disease at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Her training includes advanced expertise in the management of glaucoma, dry eye, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, uveitis, and a myriad of other ocular diseases.She also earned her Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry in 2020.

Sarah is especially passionate about low vision, which she gained interest in during her time at K-State in the gerontology program. She has been an officer in the Optometric Society of Greater Kansas City and was accepted into the 2023 class of the Merton C. Flom Leadership Academy, provided by the American Academy of Optometry. She recently accepted a position as a staff optometrist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kansas and is excited to provide care to the veterans in her community.

In her spare time, Sarah loves reading, traveling, and cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs and any K-State team. She also loves spending time with her friends and family, especially her fiancé. She and her fiancé have two dogs, Hank and Dodger, and one cat, Odie.
