The Financial Planning Summer Institute is a program from the Personal Financial Planning program in the College of Health and Human Sciences that allows high schoolers an opportunity for an immersive experience diving into the career options in financial planning through interactive activities, teamwork and fun. Participants will interact with alumni and faculty, our industry partners, and current students all while experiencing life on K-State’s main campus.
This program is ideal for any 2024-2025 high school sophomore, junior, or senior interested in a career in financial planning or similar disciplines.
No, this is an opportunity to dip your toe and welcomes first time interests as well as individuals that have already found a passion for areas of financial planning. This is for anyone interested in learning about what personal financial planning is and how it ties together the world of people, relationships and financial decisions.
Participants are asked to bring toiletries, any necessary medications, several changes of clothes (lounge, professional, and casual), and comfortable walking shoes. Campers may also consider bringing snacks, extra bedding, or extra towels.
A laptop is encouraged.

All of your meals and program expenses will be covered with your program registration. However, there is are coffee shops, convenience stores, and vending machines around campus, so we do encourage participants to bring some extra spending cash if they’d like to utilize those amenities.
Yes – participants are able to bring a personal phone if they wish. They will be responsible for it and asked to not use it during activities with the program.
There will be up to 50 high schoolers participating.
Participants should arrive on campus on Sunday* between 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. for check-in. Upon check-in, participants will receive their room assignment. At 3:00 p.m., parents and participants will have a short welcome session before parents depart.
Dinner for our campers will be provided that evening.

The summer program is overseen by the Institute Director, Dr. Blake Gray. Faculty, Program Staff, and Counselors will be with the campers during all activities. Our Counselors will serve as community coordinators and will be housed with campers in the resident hall should any needs arise.

The participants will work through a case study that is broken into various selections that go over topics of investments, estate planning, retirement, saving, budgeting, and accounting, as well as a nod to marketing, sales, management, and entrepreneurial topics.
Housing Questions
Roommates will be randomly assigned based on gender.
Yes – participants will be given the opportunity to request a roommate on their registration. Both individuals must indicate interest in sharing a room for the week in order to be assigned together.
Program participants will be staying in a double room with a fellow camper at one of our on-campus residence halls. Hall location varies from summer to summer.
Each room will include a dresser, desk, and two beds with mattresses. Each bed will have its own set of sheets*, a blanket*, and a pillow provided for the student to use if they wish. The room will also have a set of towels available for each student. The building also has a laundry facility available for a fee. Additional features may be available depending on the residence hall.
* Please note that sheets provided by the residence hall are not fitted. The blankets that are provided are not extremely heavy. Participants in past programs have recommended others bring their own twin XL fitted sheet and additional blanket.
Participants will be provided three meals each day at either the Kramer Dining Center or Derby Dining Center on K-State's main campus. There may be 1-2 meals catered outside of the dining center.
Participants with any food allergies and special diet needs should indicate this on their program registration form. The Dining Center teams have dietitians on staff that will work with individuals to help plan meals and locate the appropriate foods within the dining center to keep you healthy and safe.
Yes - Each participant will receive a key to their room. Each residence hall also has safety measures in place for accessing the building.
Restroom styles vary depending on the residence hall. Participants should plan to use a community style restroom with other participants of the same gender in the program. More details will be shared once a residence hall location is secured.
Transportation Questions
Yes – you will be given a parking pass that allows you to leave your vehicle parked on campus for the program duration. Please note that participants will not be allowed to drive their private vehicle during the program, nor take any other participants with them.
A parking permit for visitor parking can be provided during check-in. There is no additional fee to park your car on campus for the week.
Transportation will be provided by the university when necessary. Most, if not all, activities will stay on campus and are within walking distance of one another.
Registration Questions
Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and will close when the camp meets capacity. Registration opens on March 2025.
Full payment is required during the registration process. Payment will be completed through CashNet via credit or debit card.
- There is a $150 non-refundable fee to secure your spot in this program.
- If cancellation occurs prior to May 1st, $300 will be refunded.
- If cancellation occurs prior to June 1st, $200 will be refunded.
- Any cancellation after June 1st, will no longer be eligible for a refund.
No – This program is set up to be an immersive experience. There is not a commuter price or policy/procedure available at this time.
We will have a waitlist for participants who wish to participate this year. If a registered student cancels, the first individual on the waiting list will be invited to join.
Once the 2025 programs are full, an interest list will be available for the summer 2026 programs. Joining the interest list places you on our communication list, ensuring you receive updates on the Financial Planning Summer Institute for Summer 2026.
