Funding

Students accepted to the Applied Family Science program competitively apply for graduate research and teaching assistantships each year. This support includes the full cost of tuition, a monthly stipend, and health insurance. Although awarded on a competitive basis, in recent years we have been able to offer assistantships to most master’s and doctoral students who desire an assistantship. In addition, students may also pursue funding through internal opportunities and external grants and fellowships.

Teaching Assistantships

A teaching assistantship allows students to gain vital experience in class preparation, organization, facilitation, and grading. Each student with a teaching assistantship will be assigned to work on one specific undergraduate course and will have a faculty mentor with whom the student will work. Students begin in teaching assistantships that have a great deal of structure that allow students to learn about the teaching process, and with satisfactory performance, students are able to take on additional course responsibilities in future teaching assistantships.

Research Assistantships

Research assistantships enables students to gain vital experience in the research process. As a graduate research assistant, students work closely with a faculty mentor on the faculty member’s research. While the types of experiences differ from assistantship to assistantship, typical activities include conducting literature searches, data collection, data analysis, and presentation and publication of findings. Research assistantships provide students opportunities to gain hands-on experiences in the research process and often culminate in conference presentations and publications.

Internal Support

Applied Family Science students have the opportunity to be nominated and/or apply for the following opportunities at Kansas State:

  • Timothy R. Donoghue Graduate Scholarship
  • University Distinguished Professors Graduate Student Award
  • Small Research Grants Program for Graduate Students in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
  • College of Health and Human Services Doctoral Dissertation Research Awards

In addition, students may apply for financial support to attend and present at conferences:
