History

The roots of the K-State Hospitality Management Department can be traced back to 1952 when K-State President James A. McCain stressed the importance of establishing a restaurant management Program at K-State with Dean Margaret Justin. Dean Justin gathered a group of faculty from home economics, business administration, technical journalism, and accounting, along with industry representatives from the local community and state. Together, they developed the first restaurant management program in the state of Kansas. In the 1980s the hotel curriculum was added to the program and in 2013, the curriculum added a focused concentration in meeting, convention, and event management.
