Professional Biography
Carol Kellett is a K-State graduate who has received awards for outstanding teaching and is noted as an author of numerous grants. As Dean of the College of Human Ecology (1998 – 2006), Kellett provided leadership for a strategic plan, faculty development, facilities construction, and increasing research grants and philanthropic gifts. Kellett began a professional development leave in January 2006, when she accepted the invitation to serve as a faculty scholar in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She provided leadership for strategic planning in the Families, 4-H and Nutrition Unit from January through July 2006. During the 2006-07 academic year, Kellett is on sabbatical studying human ecology trends and women’s leadership roles. She will return as professor in Fall 2007.
Throughout her career, Kellett looked for ways to improve society through the betterment of families. She began her career as a home economics teacher in Blue Springs, Missouri before moving to the University of Missouri as an instructor. Kellett served as Assistant Director of the Youth Employment Project, a project of the National Collaboration for Youth, and continued her career as a professor at Central Missouri State University, where she chaired the Home Economics Department for 4 years.
Kellett was a professor at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), for 11 years and chaired the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences for 4 years. As Director of the Urban Families Initiative, Kellett authored grants funded with almost $5 million to address issues of immigrant families living in neighborhoods where poverty is prevalent. During 1996-1997 Kellett was selected for the prestigious American Council on Education Fellowship. Prior to becoming Dean at K-State, Kellett served as Special Assistant to the CSULB Provost.
Kellett is the recipient of numerous honors including the CSULB Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award; the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Commemorative Lecture Award; and the K-State Distinguished Service Award in Human Ecology. Kellett served as the national president of the Board on Human Sciences, an affiliate of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and as President of the Kansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She holds membership in Kappa Omicron Nu, Phi Upsilon Omicron and other scholarly societies.
