Reading achievement is critical to academic and vocational success and the foundations of reading begin with spoken language in the preschool and early elementary school years. Speech-language pathologists often work with children at-risk of manifesting reading disorders and can play a role in developing critical skills in areas such as phonological awareness, vocabulary, and syntax (among others). Dr. Rehfeld studies how to implement interventions to support children's early development of these concepts so that they can acquire, develop fluency with, and generalize skills related to reading and writing.

Dr. Rehfeld also studies the ways in which pre-service training programs support students' development of academic and clinical knowledge and skills. The scholarship of teaching and learning acknowledges that not all training methods are created equally and that data-driven, evidence-informed decision making facilitates students' progression toward professional practice.

Dr. Rehfeld frequently presents at local, state, and national conferences and has co-authored multiple publications related to both developmental language disorders and the scholarship of teaching and learning. He has also supervised multiple master's level capstone projects and chaired doctoral level capstone projects as well.
