The Showcase of Excellence gallery exhibit and runway show are the kick-off events of the annual ATID Student Symposium. The Showcase events provide current and prospective students the opportunity to show their work to the public and industry professionals.
The 2020 theme is Our Legacy – Empowerment.
In 1870, 150 years ago, the State of Kansas authorized the development of an academic program that would empower women through a college education. They understood that women on the western frontier of the US needed knowledge and skills to be able to support themselves and their families, to help their families thrive in challenging locations and to make their new frontier communities healthy and vibrant. Our department’s roots are in those very first courses taught to women at the first operating school created under the Morrill Act, Kansas State Agricultural College.
Sewing was among the first courses taught in the Farm and Domestic Economy program. Soon after they added other coursework related to healthy and efficient household management. Today, we continue the tradition of empowering our students and graduates, both women and men, to have meaningful lives and productive careers.
The 2020 Showcase of Excellence calls for entries of student work that embodies the concept of Empowerment. For the purposes of this competition please consider empowerment through these five frames: educational, social, economic, political and psychological.
Submissions may be any 2D, 3D, or digital work that could be displayed in a gallery exhibition or runway show and represent excellence in research, scholarly and creative activities, and discovery. Entrants may be any current K-State undergraduate or graduate student, Spring or Fall 2019 K-State graduate, or 7th – 12th grade student.
In addition, students may submit work ‘Inspired by Janet Rees’. This category is in memory in Janet Lee Rees. Images of apparel representing the donation from Richard D. Rees, will serve as inspiration for submissions in this category.
Each submission will be evaluated by jurors to determine acceptance into the Showcase of Excellence. The exception is student work collected by faculty that represent scholarly excellence. Those works will automatically be included in the gallery or runway. However, an application form must still be submitted by the student for the faculty collected work.
The department of ATID may disqualify any entry at any time. Reasons for non-acceptance or disqualification may include, but are not limited to, lack of citation or inappropriate citation; unacceptable quality, fit, or function; inappropriate for display at a family event; incomplete ensemble or submission; not easily taken on or off or not able to be displayed appropriately.
There will be gallery and runway awards for upper (third-year through graduate) and lower (first- and second-year) division K-State students, and awards for the Inspired by Janet Rees category and 7th-12th grade student submissions. K-State student first place awards are reserved for entries that address the theme: Our Legacy – Empowerment.
To assist in preparing content for the online entry form, the main requirements are project title, names and contact information of all participants, purpose and/or process statement, image of entry, and entry measurements. The entry form does have the option to save and continue later.
