Application Information

Admission Criteria

The unit faculty in its review of your application takes into consideration your undergraduate grade point average (especially during the last two years of study), your GRE scores, the extent to which our programs match your academic objectives, and your potential for graduate study as reflected by your transcripts and your letters of recommendation. A strong applicant will have a grade point average of 3.5 and a GRE score of 300 or above. However, other factors may outweigh deficiencies in GPA and GRE scores. Admission is not contingent upon having a specific type of undergraduate degree (many of our graduate students come from areas outside of family studies and human services). Academic background in the behavioral social sciences is desired. It will be helpful to you to have additional previous coursework in statistics, abnormal psychology, research methods, and the basic social sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology) but these are not required for admission.

Required Application Materials

Application to all graduate programs at K-State are processed through the Graduate School website.

Note: if you are interested in being considered for the post bachelor’s doctoral degree you will apply for the master’s degree program, and during the application process you will be asked to indicate whether you would also like to be considered for the post bachelor’s doctoral degree.

A complete application requires:

  • The Graduate School Application
  • Graduate School application fee (as stated on the Graduate School website)
  • Transcript(s) from each college or university which you have attended
  • Graduate Record Exam scores (GRE, use code 6334)
  • Statement of objectives: Within this statement of objectives, we expect you to respond to each of the following questions. This statement should be about 1,000 words in length. In evaluating this statement, special attention is paid to expression of clear long-term professional goals, previous research experiences, and clarity of research interests.
    1. Why do you want to be a couple and family therapist?
    2. What are your professional goals upon completing the degree?
    3. Why are you interested in getting a doctoral degree?
    4. What do you consider to be strengths that will help you achieve your goals?  Address personal, academic, and professional background.
    5. What research, human service, and/or volunteer experience have you participated in?
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • Three letters of recommendation from former/current instructors, employers, or other professionals in a position to evaluate your potential for graduate study

International applicants must, in addition to the required materials previously listed, provide the following:

  • TOEFL Score: A TOEFL of at least 600 (paper test), 250 (computer-based test), or 100 (internet-based test) is required
  • Affidavit of Financial Support and supporting documentation (as stated on the Graduate School website)

Application Deadline

This program begins Fall semesters only with a December 1 deadline for the following Fall semester.

Upon approval by the CFT program and the School of Family Studies and Human Services, your file will be forwarded for final approval to the Graduate School, which checks the completeness of your application, official transcripts, and verifies that you have or will soon have a valid degree from an accredited institution. If approved, the Graduate School will send you a formal letter of acceptance with admissions details.

After Your Admission

You will be assigned a temporary advisor who will help you select your first courses and assist you in enrollment. This faculty member may or may not become your major professor when you set up your supervisory committee. Please feel free to contact your temporary advisor prior to arriving on campus regarding any questions you may have about Manhattan, being a graduate student, or about our program.
