Spring 2025 Newsletter
Greetings from the Program Chair
Dear Alumni and Friends,
As spring blossoms across our beautiful campus, I'm delighted to share updates from Fashion Studies at K-State! This season has been filled with significant milestones and memorable experiences that continue to shape the future of Fashion Studies at Kansas State University.
This May, we celebrate a special cohort of undergraduate students completing their K-State journey. Most of these remarkable students began their college experience in the fall of 2020—our "COVID class." Their first year with us was unlike any other, with hybrid learning environments, social distancing protocols, and mask mandates becoming their unexpected norm. Despite these extraordinary challenges, they adapted with grace and determination, and we will miss having them in our classrooms next year.
We have had a busy spring semester here in our program. The semester started with Dr. Melody LeHew leading more than 20 students to New York City for the National Retail Federation's annual Student Program. This invaluable experience provided students opportunities to network with retail professionals, participate in career fairs, and gain insights from industry leaders through compelling keynote presentations.
Showcase of Excellence 2025: A Celebration of Student Creativity and Collaboration.
The 2025 Showcase of Excellence highlighted over 80 designs in a student-led fashion show celebrating creativity, collaboration, and the spirit of growth within K-State’s Fashion Studies program.
Notable Research:
Protecting Women Who Protect Us: Innovating Female-Specific Firefighting Gear.
Dr. Yingying Wu’s research at Kansas State University is revolutionizing firefighting gear by designing female-specific PPE that prioritizes safety, fit, and performance for women in the fire service.
As more women join the ranks of the firefighting profession, one critical element remains outdated: their gear. Personal protective equipment (PPE)—such as turnout coats and pants—is essential for shielding firefighters from extreme heat, hazardous chemicals, and physical dangers. Yet much of this gear remains designed primarily for male body types, leaving female firefighters to work in equipment that often fits poorly, performs inadequately, and compromises their safety. At Kansas State University, Dr. Yingying Wu is leading groundbreaking research to close this gap by developing firefighting gear tailored specifically to the needs of women. Her work represents a vital step toward equity, safety, and innovation in both public service and apparel design.
Inspiring the Next Generation: K-State’s Farm to Fashion Camp Blends Creativity, Sustainability, and Community Impact.
Farm to Fashion is a hands-on summer camp at Kansas State University that introduces middle and high school students to the full fashion cycle through sustainable practices, creative exploration, and mentorship from faculty and students.
Each summer, the Fashion Studies Program at Kansas State University opens its doors—and studios—to the next generation of creative thinkers through Farm to Fashion, a dynamic, hands-on day camp designed for middle and high school students. Led by faculty members Dr. Kim Hiller, Dr. Melody LeHew, and Dr. Kelsie Doty, the camp introduces young learners to the complete fashion cycle—from natural fibers to finished designs—in an engaging, real-world setting.
Student Experience:
K-State Fashion Studies Students Engage with Industry Leaders at National Retail Federation’s 2025 New York Student Program
Kansas State University’s Fashion Studies program continues to provide transformative experiences that prepare students for successful careers in the retail and fashion industries. As a university member of the National Retail Federation (NRF) Foundation—the world’s largest retail trade association—K-State offers students access to exclusive networking, scholarship, and career development opportunities through NRF membership.
Closing Thoughts
As we wrap up another vibrant and inspiring spring semester, we reflect with gratitude on the incredible support that fuels our program’s growth and success. From the students exploring new creative boundaries to faculty leading innovative research and outreach, none of it would be possible without the encouragement and generosity of our donors, partners, alumni, and friends.
Your continued engagement helps us shape the future of fashion—one that values sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation. Whether through mentorship, financial support, or simply staying connected, your impact is deeply felt across our classrooms, studios, and beyond.
From all of us at K-State Fashion Studies, thank you for being part of our journey. We look forward to what the future holds and hope you’ll continue to walk alongside us as we nurture the next generation of designers, makers, and visionaries.
