Shelby Boso '20

Shelby graduated from Kansas State University in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Science, a minor in Conflict Analysis and Trauma Studies, and a certificate in Conflict Resolution. During her time at Kansas State, she was involved in research through the Families in Transition Lab from October 2017 to May 2020. As a research assistant, she supported multiple projects, including studies on sacrifice among military wives and co-parenting dynamics. These experiences strengthened her understanding of family systems, trauma, and resilience, and helped shape her approach to service-centered work.
While in school, Shelby also served as a Peer Mentor for Human Development and Family Science majors and minors. In this role, she assisted students with academic questions, offered guidance on enrollment and course planning, helped students navigate degree requirements, and worked collaboratively with faculty to support student success. This experience reinforced her interest in mentorship and collaboration.
Shelby began her professional career while still in college, working at a children’s home serving youth who had been removed from their homes. Following graduation, she was promoted into a forensic interviewer and family advocate role, where she supported children and families through complex and sensitive situations. After two years in this work, Shelby experienced compassion fatigue and transitioned into a marketing and events role within the same organization. This shift allowed her to remain connected to mission-driven work while discovering a passion for sharing impact and engaging the community, informed by her direct service background.
Shelby joined ICT SOS two years ago as a Development Assistant and currently serves as the Development Coordinator. In this role, she supports donor engagement, fundraising efforts, and community outreach that advance prevention education and advocacy services for survivors of human trafficking. She is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to meaningful work while continuing to grow professionally.
Service has remained a consistent part of Shelby’s life. She has volunteered in various roles, previously served on a nonprofit board, and currently serves on the Association of Fundraising Professionals board as the Scholarship Chair. She especially enjoys volunteering as a House Parent at Camp Hope, a camp for children with cancer, and serving in her church’s 1st–5th grade classroom.
Although her career path has evolved since college, Shelby believes her education and early experiences have shaped the way she approaches her work and relationships today. She remains thankful for the mentors and opportunities that have supported her journey and continues to be motivated by serving others and strengthening her community.
Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, Shelby enjoys spending time with family and friends. In her free time, she especially loves being with her golden retriever, Channing, whether that’s relaxing at home or getting outside together.
